2007-08 Baltimore Raiders

Previous Seasons

The Baltimore Ravens are only a few years removed from their first and only Super Bowl win. In 2000, head coach Brian Billick led his team to a 12-4 record and four straight wins to a Lombardi Trophy. The defense was arguably the best the NFL has ever seen. In their four postseason contests, the tenacious D only allowed a combined 23 points and was led by All-World linebacker Ray Lewis. That averages out to 5.75 points allowed against the best teams the AFC had to offer, not to mention the best team in the NFC. The last time there was a defense as dominant as they were, were the 1985 Super Bowl Shufflin’ Chicago Bears. They are the only team that is mentioned in the same breath as the Ravens defense of 2000.

In the off-season, the team knew it needed to make some upgrades to their team to propel them back into another Super Bowl. Their offense had been terrible in recent years and they needed to find a wideout for young quarterback Kyle Boller or they need to find a replacement for him. The team says that he is still the number one out there, but his time is getting ready to run out on him. This could be the last season we see him enter training camp as the starting signal caller. Their other hole was at the cornerback position opposite of Pro Bowler Chris McAllister.

They got a new weapon for Boller to play with when they signed former Tennessee Titan wideout Derrick Mason. The team also turned around and signed Mason’s former teammate in Tennessee, cornerback Samari Rolle. With these two players the Ravens filled their two biggest needs and still had money to sign a couple of other contributors. The team brought in former Rams linebacker Tommy Polley to replace Edgerton Hartwell who left for the Flacons to get out of Lewis’ shadow.

In the draft, the Ravens also made some significant upgrades to their team with some very astute picks. With their first round selection, they grabbed Oklahoma wideout Mark Clayton. He is the type of receiver that is needed in a growing Baltimore offense. He is a tough, gritty receiver who relishes going over the middle and taking the big hit to make a catch. In addition to that, he can use his exceptional speed to beat corners off the line and catch the deep ball.

With their second pick, Billick took Oklahoma alum when he chose defensive end Dan Cody. Cody wasn’t one of the biggest defensive lineman in the draft, but he certainly ranks high in how much heart he plays with. He is the epitome of the saying “playing with a motor that never quits.” The only hang up about Cody is that he has had trouble staying healthy. Other than that his lack of weight isn’t a factor since he uses his strength and leverage for him in such an efficient fashion.
